For many of us, jewelry plays a significant role in defining who we are. Jewelry may define our history, heritage, date of birth and even relationship status. With all this in mind, it’s easy to understand the importance of keeping jewelry properly stored in a jewelry box when not in use.
Unfortunately with time, jewelry boxes tend to grow old and eventually need to be replaced or upgraded. If it has been a while since you replaced your jewelry box, you may have noticed some issues that indicate it’s time for an upgrade. The following are five signs that you need to upgrade your jewelry box.
1. Wrong Type of Compartments
Most jewelry boxes come with compartments of different sizes and shapes where you can place different types of jewelry. As your collection grows you may need to store a larger variety of jewelry in your jewelry box, which means the space in each compartment may no longer be adequate to store all of your items.
If you try to just force your jewelry into these compartments, it may cause your items to get tangled, especially bracelets and necklaces. Separating tangled jewelry can be a headache, and you may end up breaking the fragile chains. It’s much more costly to replace an expensive chain than it is to purchase a jewelry box with the appropriate compartments.
2. Worn Interior/Exterior
Over the years repeated use will wear down even the best jewelry boxes. Wood jewelry boxes could weaken and crack over time. Jewelry boxes with leather interiors could rip and begin to peel off. The shifting and movement of jewelry can wear out the interior lining of your jewelry box and cause the seams that hold it together to tear.
Any of this damage could compromise the safety of your jewelry. Certain issues could even destroy the usability of your jewelry box altogether. If you have noticed your jewelry box is starting to wear down, it may be time to consider getting a new one.
3. Faulty Doors and Drawers
The inability of doors or drawers to effectively close or open is a good clear sign that you need to upgrade your jewelry box. Most jewelry boxes are compartmentalized with different doors and drawers that prove very useful when your box is still new.
These compartments offer you a lot of ways to organize your jewelry and keep it secure. If the drawers and doors on your jewelry box no longer open or shut as naturally as they used to, it is a clear indication that the box may be damaged and in need of replacement.
4. Not Enough Room
Having a large collection of jewelry is lovely. There is nothing wrong with purchasing that new ring or pendant and adding it your growing collection. When I fall in love with a certain piece sometime I just have to buy it. However storing that growing collection in the same old jewelry box you’ve been using for years may be an issue. Unless you get rid of older pieces, you’ll probably run out of room overtime.
It is important for each piece to have adequate space when being stored. Bracelets need to be kept away from the necklaces while rings need to be contained to prevent them from jolting onto each other which could result in them getting damaged. There comes a time when all spaces get occupied yet you still have to store your new pieces. When this is the case, you need to purchase an additional jewelry box or a larger jewelry box.
Final Thoughts
If the safety and security of your jewelry is important to you, then having a proper jewelry box is essential. A proper jewelry box will provide adequate space and compartments to store your jewelry and be free of any interior or exterior damage. You should always be on the lookout for signs that your jewelry box is nearing the end of its life.
No one can prevent all wear and damage to their jewelry box. Repeated use will eventually cause all jewelry boxes to break down over time. It is best to simply replace or upgrade your jewelry box if you notice it has begun to ware. This will ensure your jewelry is never in danger.
